The Development of Corrosion Protection for Overhead Conductors
Overhead conductor grease was developed to address corrosion problems that occur during long-term operation of power transmission lines.
In outdoor environments, conductors are exposed to moisture, rain, salt spray, industrial pollution, and temperature changes. Over time, these factors can affect aluminum strands, steel cores, and conductor connection areas. The need for better corrosion protection led to the development and wider use of conductor greases.
Early Use with ACSR Conductors
With the increasing use of ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) conductors in power transmission systems, corrosion protection became an important consideration.
ACSR conductors contain both aluminum and steel components. When moisture enters the conductor structure, galvanic corrosion may occur between different metals.
Conductor greases were introduced to reduce moisture penetration and provide protection between aluminum strands and steel cores, helping improve conductor durability in outdoor applications.
Development for New Transmission Technologies
As power networks expanded, new conductor designs were introduced to meet higher transmission capacity and communication requirements.
- OPGW Conductors
The development of OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) combined transmission functions with fiber optic communication. This created new requirements for protecting metallic components against corrosion while maintaining mechanical performance.
- HTLS Conductors
With the demand for higher power transmission capacity, HTLS (High Temperature Low Sag) conductors were developed. These conductors operate under higher temperatures, requiring greases with suitable thermal stability and long-term protection performance.
Evolution of Standards and Quality Requirements
As conductor grease applications became more widespread, industry standards were developed to define product performance requirements.
Standards such as:
IEC 61394
BS EN 50326
GB/T 36292-2018
provide guidance for the testing and evaluation of corrosion protection greases used on overhead conductors.
OPSTECH participated as one of the core drafting units in the development of GB/T 36292-2018, contributing practical experience from conductor grease research, manufacturing, and application.

Today, overhead conductor grease is widely used in transmission and distribution systems around the world.
Modern conductor greases are designed to provide protection for different conductor types and operating environments, including coastal areas, high-humidity regions, and industrial environments.
With continuous development of power infrastructure, conductor grease remains an important material for improving the service life and reliability of overhead transmission systems.
